MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) is aware of reports in the media pertaining to the closure of MCC’s pig slaughterhouse at Lot 1062, Krokop Lorong 2.

In a statement on Monday (Feb 6), MCC clarified that such reports are untrue and it is still providing pig slaughtering services when such requests are submitted and acknowledged.

To obtain such services, MCC requires the person to register with it, which will then render the person eligible to purchase coupons to enter, keep, use the facilities, and obtain services for slaughtering their pigs.

“MCC understands that the African Swine Fever (ASF) in Sarawak has devastated the pig farming and its downstream industry.

“Our records show that requests for slaughtering of pigs at the slaughterhouse had been reduced by more than 95 per cent since October 2022,” the statement said.

For the month of January 2023, only 203 pigs were delivered and slaughtered at the location.

The 203 pigs were slaughtered on three separate days averaging 68 pigs per day.

MCC shall carry out cleaning and maintenance works on a regular basis to ensure that all machinery is in good working condition even when there are no requests for slaughtering services for a period of time.

“Therefore, MCC will continue providing such facilities and services for the local population in accordance with the laws applicable in Sarawak.”
