Miri city parade draws crowd of 40,000

MIRI: Around 40,000 spectators flocked to the Marina Times Square on Saturday night for the city street parade, held in conjunction with Sarawak’s 60th independence celebration.

The parade, officiated  by state Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, featured 17 decorated floats and 60 contingents from various government agencies, private companies and school students.

Miri was the third city in Sarawak after Kuching and Sibu to host the parade in conjunction with the independence anniversary.

In the secondary school category, SMK Lutong emerged champion, followed by SM Persendirian Jalan Riam and SMK Riam Miri.

In the floats category, the winner was Samling and Parkcity Group; second placing went to Miri City Council and Miri Port Authority finished third.

In the government and private category Miri General Operation Force (GOF) was named the winner, followed by Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and Miri Industrial Training Institute (ILP).

In the cultural association category, Miri Orang Ulu Women Association was named the winner, second place went to Jatti Miriek and third, Persatuan Dayak Miri.

Also witnessing the parade were Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie Tayai, Municipal Vice Mayor of La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines, Roderick Awingan and Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, Raden Sigit Witjaksono.

Estimated at about 40,000 spectators flocked the Marina Times Square to witnessing the event. Two talented Sarawak singer-Dayang Nurfaizah and BobYusof were also performed during the event.
