MIRI: Only live pigs from licensed farms from the southern part of Sarawak certified by the State Veterinary Services (DVS) will be allowed in here from now on.

This is part of the division’s preventive measures to curb the spread of the African Swine Fever (ASF), said State Minister of Transport Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin who also oversees the division’s disaster management committee on Wednesday (Jan 26).

Lee was said this after chairing a meeting with local pig farm operators and sellers on issues pertaining to pig supplies into Miri.

The meeting was held after Lee had received a letter signed by 37 pig farmers and sellers voicing concern about stopping pig supplies from Kuching due to the ASF outbreak.

“We are trying our very best to resolve this problem to ensure sufficient supply during the Chinese New Year and we also seek the cooperation of all pig farms here in ensuring the farms are licensed,” he said.

“Sixty-two per cent of pig supply to Miri comes from Kuching, Samarahan, and Serian divisions while the remaining figure (36 per cent) comes from our local pig farms here,” he pointed out.

Lee said pigs transported to Miri from the southern division (Kuching, Serian and Samarahan) would be inspected and issued with veterinary health certificate (VHC) by veterinary officers.

The procedure will be carried out before they are brought to the council’s abbatoir for slaughter.

Also present at the meeting were Miri Resident Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof and Miri Divisional Veterinary Officer Dr Sylmie Al-Harir.
