Miri hosts Gawai Dayak on May 25

MIRI: A divisional Gawai Dayak celebration will be held at the Grand Ballroom, Meritz Hotel here on May 25.

The celebration is an annual event organised by the Miri Division Gawai Dayak working committee which comprises 12 Dayak ethnic non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in collaboration with the Resident and District offices.

This year, this auspicious event will be hosted by the Dayak Association Miri (DAM) and deputy president of the association Wilfred Mac will spearhead the committee.

Senator Dr Nuing Jeluing, advisor of the committee, explained that the annual event aimed to unite Dayak community in the northern region of Sarawak through culture, traditions and education.

This year, the event will be officiated by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Wilfred urges the local community to support all the activities organised in conjunction with the celebration.

Among the activities are Dayak students’ education excellence award presentation, Kumang lban/Dayung Sangon/Keligit Orang Ulu/Keling-Belawan contest, a blood donation drive, a Dayak songs karaoke contest, a children’s colouring contest and a community outreach programme for the needy.

Tickets for the Miri Division Gawai Dayak dinner will be on sale in the next two weeks.
