Miri ready to host six sporting events in upcoming SUKMA

MIRI: This city stands ready to host six sports events for the upcoming 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) set to take place from August 17 to 24.

Having said this, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin added the venues include Marina Bay for sailing sport; Miri Stadium for rugby; Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club for sword fighting; IKBN Multipurpose Hall for karate; IKBN Football Field and SK Merbau Football field for men and women softball games; and Miri Indoor Stadium for pencak silat.

“The adrenaline-packed lineup includes numerous sporting events, promising spectators and participants alike a thrilling showcase of talent and athleticism,” he said during the Baton Relay programme held at Miri City Fan recreation park here today (Apr 28).

Lee’s text-of-speech was read out by Deputy Minister of Youth, Sport and
Entrepreneur Development II (Entrepreneur Development) Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat.

“We also hope that Sarawak will be the runaway champion at SUKMA. The biggest hope is to see our athletes achieve excellent performance, representing their respective states with passion and dedication,” Lee disclosed.

In addition, Lee urged the local community to seize the opportunity presented by the organisation of SUKMA to participate directly or indirectly.

“Take this opportunity for us to generate income in business and tourism activities,” he added.

Miri served as the second destination for the Baton Relay programme after Limbang, marking the beginning of SUKMA and Para SUKMA fever across the nation.

Led by former national sprinter Watson Nyambek and joined by 500 participants, the Baton Run programme here commenced with a 2.8km run. Nyambek later passed the baton to Ripin after completing the run.

Also present were the Deputy State Secretary cum the Games’ chief executive officer Datu Hii Chang Kee, Miri mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang and Miri Resident Jamalie Busri.
