MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) has a new policy that requires collectors of used cooking oil to be registered.

“They will be authorised to collect used cooking oil from all the eateries under MCC’s jurisdiction,” said Mayor Adam Yii.

“This is now part of the eateries licensing conditions effective from Jan 1 next year.”

This policy, explained Yii, would prevent used cooking oil from being recycled and reused in the food chain.

Those interested can contact MCC’s Public Health Section to obtain a copy of the criteria for registration as a used cooking oil collector.

No fee is required and those currently doing such work are encouraged to apply.

Registered collectors would be audited and monitored regularly to ensure that they comply with all licensing conditions and standard operating procedure, stressed Yii.

The selling price of the used cooking oil will be decided between the eatery and the collector.

An additional benefit of this policy is that it would reduce the amount of used cooking oil that goes into the city’s drainage system, which is often blocked because of this.

This will also reduce the foul smell emitting from the clogged drains.

Currently, there are 661 licensed eateries under MCC and there are two licensed collectors of recycled cooking oil, Sekitar Bumi Hijau Sdn Bhd and Ecowish Sdn Bhd, which are collecting about 14,000 to 20,000 litres of recycled cooking oil a month.
