MIRI: The Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park reopened today after it was closed from last Wednesday due to investigation into a diver found dead at a diving site within the area.

The decision to reopen was applauded by local diving operators as they had not only lost income due to the pandemic, but also the park’s closure.

Prior to the closure, diving operators had sought Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin’s help for diving activities to be allowed at the Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park site.

Diving activities are allowed to be carried out under strict standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“Upon receiving their (diving operators) request, I’ve contacted the head of Sarawak Forestry Corporation regarding the situation and he has agreed to reopen the park.

“…but they must adhere strictly to SOPs,” said Lee, who is also minister in-charge of Miri Divisional Disaster Management Committee.
