Miri teams dominate in BugCrusher 2022

Team “Little Giants” of SJK(C) Chung Hua Krokop Miri won the junior category of Bugcrusher 2022.

KUCHING: Miri teams defeated other schools in both the senior and junior categories of BugCrusher 2022 held at the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) Creative Heritage Innovation Centre recently.

In a press release yesterday, 10 teams across Sarawak competed in senior and junior categories to “debug” or fix bugs found in the website or software as well as pitch their enhancements to emerge as Sarawak’s elite junior coders.

In the junior category, Team “Little Giants” of SJK Chung Hua Krokop emerged as the champion and brought home cash prizes worth RM1,600 alongside other prizes.

Team Moaaatch from SJK (C) Chung Hua Bintulu and Team Art from SJK Chung Hua Batu 4.5 Kuching won the first and second runner-up titles respectively.

For the record, Team Moaaatch was also the reigning champion for 2020 and 2021.

Meanwhile, the senior category saw Team Zero Coke from SMK Chung Hua Miri being crowned champion and also brought home cash prizes worth RM1,600 and a trophy.

Team Spartan and Team YEC, both from SMK Chung Hua Miri as well were placed first and second runners-up respectively, thereby making a
big win for the school as the students bagged the top three prizes in the senior category.

Special prizes were also awarded to teams with exceptional performance in the following awards of both categories, namely Best Technical Implementation, Best Enhancements and Best Pitch.
Additionally, the competition stressed the importance of guidance and leadership that teachers provide with a Most Supportive Teacher prize, with winners walking away with RM300 each.
Sarawak Science Centre’s interim chief executive officer Shariman Jamil in his welcoming speech said the youth of Sarawak are always encouraged to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) because there is a need for more problem solvers for the future.
Shariman, who is also the Head of Talent Development at the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, launched the upcoming “GirlsCode 2022”, a mobile application challenge exclusively for girls aged 10 – 17 in Sarawak that aims to boost STEM engagement and help young Sarawakian women become future problem solvers.
He also noted the diverse backgrounds of the 176 Girlscode participants from nine cities throughout Sarawak and not just from Miri and Kuching.
“Our partners who made the event happen are working tirelessly to help Sarawakian students access the latest and best of technology to help you upskill and choose a career you want in the future,” said Hazwan Razak, Head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Department at the Sarawak Digital Economic Corporation (SDEC).
Realfun Learning Centre founder and director Teo Yuang Teck said Bugcrusher 2022 was designed to help students master the Four C’s; critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.
The event was organised by Realfun Learning Centre and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Bhd. along with collaborators Champs Education Miri and the valued support of the State Education Department (JPN).
