Missing elderly man and granddaughter found safe

Paramedics attended to 71-year-old Aidil after he was found by rescuers alongside his granddaughter.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: An elderly man and his granddaughter who were feared missing in the forest of Kampung Binyok, here were found safe by rescuers.

A spokesman for the State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre said Aidil Junit, 71, and Nurul Suhada, 12, were found at 2.43 am on Thursday (Jan 6).

He said the two victims were reported missing around 7.13 pm on Jan 5 as they had not returned after going to the forest to gather asam paya at noon.

He explained that rescuers managed to get hold of Nurul earlier via WhatsApp but had lost contact after the victim’s phone had run out of battery.

“The search and rescue (SAR) operation started by searching for the missing victims at a distance of two kilometres from the scene.

“The operations team reported that during the search, one of the victims’ voices was heard screaming but failed to locate their location in the forest,” he said.

The search operation ended at 3.35 am.

The search for the victims consisted of members of the Kota Samarahan Bomba, police and villagers.

Also present at the scene were Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang and Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Ibrahim.
