BINTULU: The relevant authorities are urged to prepare a constructive action plan to mitigate the flash flood problem in Kampung Assyakirin Phase 2.

Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang hoped the Bintulu Divisional Disaster Management Committee, the Bintulu Development Board and the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) would take the initiative to formulate various measures during the current rainy season.

He also said the necessary preventive measures should be taken in flood-prone areas to prevent further flooding because it would incur more losses to the local population.

Pang said JPS had been asked to enlarge the channel out of the sluice and raise the drain wall in the residential area to prevent rainwater from flowing into the houses and eroding the soil around the settlement area.

“Residents are worried that their houses will collapse if steps are not taken immediately,” he said after inspecting the drainage system construction works near Kampung Assyakirin here.

As a result of the incessant heavy rain on Jan 3, five residences in Kampung Assyakirin Phase 2 experienced flash floods following the overflow of water from the drainage system that was under construction.

Upon receiving a complaint from the deputy chairman of the Village Safety and Development Committee (JKKK) of Kampung Assyakirin Phase 2, Yusop Che Mat, he together with the public complaint team of Tanjong Batu Constituency Community Service Centre immediately went to the location to monitor the flood situation.

Following the inspection, the team found that only one sluice gate was opened because the drainage construction works were still being carried out in the area, preventing the water to flow smoothly, causing it to overflow into nearby homes.

Meanwhile, JKKK Welfare chairman of Kampung Assyakirin Phase 2, Razuna Kiprawi expressed her concern over the the flood issue.

She hopes that such an incident will not happen again.

“Higher retaining walls need to be built in the drainage area where residents’ houses are located to prevent water from overflowing into our houses,” she said.
