KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sabah will increase its patrols and operations during this festive season to ensure the security of Malaysian waters, particularly in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone).

MMEA Sabah director Rear Admiral Kamaruszaman Abu Hassan said the main focus of the operations would be to curb the entry of illegal immigrants and, at the same time, prevent the smuggling of controlled items out of the country, particularly in view of the upcoming Aidilfitri celebration.

“Enforcement and patrols must be stepped up to curb criminal activities at sea. Therefore, assets on standby will be deployed for the purpose of the operations,” he said in a statement today.

Kamaruszaman reminded all those travelling by sea to visit family and friends in the various islands to ensure their safety by wearing life vests and having appropriate safety equipment on board.

All seagoers and the general public can report any suspicious activity to the MERS 999 hotline or MMEA Sabah at 088-270165 or 088- 270107. – Bernama
