KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Unggah Embas said he is confident that Sarawak’s Budget 2020 to be tabled next month will meet the transformation agenda of the agriculture
sector.

He noted that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has been talking about modernising the sector and reminding Sarawakians to be ready to adapt.

“The chief minister has indicated numerous times in his speeches during events and functions that the state is going to transform its agriculture sector to be more modern,” Unggah said to reporters after launching the export of ‘banaBee’ banana chips to Guangzhao, China, by MyBanabee (M) Sdn Bhd at Senari Port here yesterday.

Uggah, who is also Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Minister, said his ministry has been promoting the use of Internet of Things (IoT) for better distribution of fertilisers to local farmers.

“I have told my staff (in the ministry) to buck up and rise to the occasion because we want optimal effect for every sen we spend,” he said.

He urged local farmers to adopt fertigation farming system, saying it is their chance to diversify their source of income through technology.

“Yesterday (Thursday) we were harvesting our golden rock melon at Rampangi, a very successful trial plot.

“This fertigation system only needs small plots of land for implementation. “Anyone wanting to do fertigation please write to me so that we can assist,” he said.
