KUCHING: Sarawak’s firefighters dedicated 65 percent of their service delivery to ground Search and Rescue (SAR) missions from January to September this year.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak director Khirudin Drahman said the department recorded the highest cases of SAR nationwide (70 percent) last year, searching for missing persons in various terrains.

“Most of the missing cases were reported in the central region (Belaga, Kapit, Bintangor) in hilly areas with lots of streams and where access roads are minimal. And we have limited facilities to conduct such search and rescue operations.

“Therefore, it is vital for us to collaborate with the relevant agencies and step out of our comfort zone in providing the best service possible, while at the same time, adapt to changes in technology,” he said when officiating at the ‘Kenyalang Mapping Technologies (KMTECH 2019): Ground Search And Rescue (SAR) competition held at a hotel here.

Meanwhile, Politeknik Kuching director Jamaliah Ahmad said SAR missions are carried out regardless of place or location. There are many latest
technologies used in assisting SAR operation, she noted.

The competition aimed to create a new application or solution that could be used to locate and rescue missing persons, accurately track the victim’s position as a navigation application.
