KUCHING: Native Land Development Assistant Minister Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn has a sad message to Dayaks celebrating Gawai — No open house, don’t go visiting and don’t send out invitations.

“It’s sad but this year’s Gawai just has to be different because our very existence is threatened,” Sagah said in his Gawai message today.

“Although open house is our culture, we are all responsible to break the chain of the spread of Covid-19. So please, no open house, don’t go visiting and tell your friends and relatives you are not inviting them over because it is not worth it exposing everyone to the virus,” Roland said.

The Tarat assemblyman went on to advise Dayaks celebrating Gawai to do so modestly, saying the economy has been greatly affected since the imposition of the movement control order on March 18.

“Many people have not been earning properly, businesses have either been closed or partially closed, therefore, my advice is, wherever possible, spend less.

“Hopefully when this is all over, the new season will bring bountiful harvest,” he said.
