“Initially Sibu Town Square was proposed as the location. I had a meeting and inspected the site myself with the relevant parties.

“However, the proposed site is not very suitable and discussions are being held for a better site to commemorate the events of December 4, 1949 and also other independence heroes,” he said when contacted last Thursday.

Dr Annuar, who is also the housing assistant minister, said that the allocation to build the monument has been approved by the state government.

“I will continue to find suitable sites with the relevant parties so that the monument of the hero here can be realised.

“So far, Sibu does not yet have a hero monument,” said the Nangka assemblyman.

Dr Annuar said the monument would enable to younger generation to know the history and struggles of our heroes.

“Independence is a result of the struggles of our forefathers such as the struggles of Rosli Dhoby. Therefore, I think it is very relevant that a hero’s monument be set up in Sibu,” he said.
