Wee, speaking to the media

KUCHING: Embracing different cultures and traditions is a norm in Sarawak that can be done in a creative way.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said mooncakes, for example, now are done with different variations with an added creativity like green tea, durian and coffee flavours.

“Other races are now doing mooncakes differently, we are seeing how the Bidayuhs and Muslims do mooncakes with an added touch of creativity.

“The packagings as you can see are still the same, done in a traditional way, but the flavours are different.

“We have yet to see a Tuak mooncake, that is creativity. You must keep with culture and tradition but you must keep with modern times too”, he said.

Wee was speaking to the media at the South Villa Garden, near Kuching South City Council (MBKS) after launching the ““Fly Me to The Moon” Mooncake Festival being held from yesterday until today (Sept 10 to 11).

He also said that Sarawak has been doing very well to understand and learn each other’s culture and tradition.

“We have more than 27 ethnic groups, we should learn and remember each other’s culture”, he said.

With the many festivals held this year, he hoped more people could understand each other’s overall lifestyle, history and cultural roots and traditions of the different races present in Sarawak.

Visitors may visit the creative market, workshops and cultural activities held during the two-day festival at MBKS from 10am to 9pm.
