SIBU: The number of students, especially bumiputeras, accepted into the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) is increasing.

Khairuddin fields questions from reporters.

UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Khairuddin Abdul Hamid disclosed this to reporters during a Ramah Tamah Gawai Raya event at UTS on Friday (May 27).

“So far we have seen a sharp increase in terms of admission of new students.

“Last February our admissions almost tripled. Even now we have seen very encouraging numbers and it is extraordinary, I think compared to previous years,” he said.

He said that they have yet to receive the full information but so far over 400 applicants have been given offers to enter the university’s foundation programmes.

He also shared that the newcomers were not only from Sarawak but also Semenanjung Malaysia and Sabah.

He revealed that the admission for Bumiputera students also showed a high increase.

“Especially those in the B40 and M40 groups because we know that most of them are facing financial problems.

“With the state government’s initiatives to provide full scholarships in terms of study grants for the foundation programme, now it is no more an issue for them,” he said.

Khairuddin pointed out that UTS was eyeing to achieve a student population target of 4,500 by 2024.

“We also encourage the number of students from abroad right now because COVID-19 is coming to an end.

“So we can do more aggressive promotion to get students from abroad.”

On the marketability of UTS graduates, Khairrudin shared that it was very impressive.

“If you follow the report from the ministry of higher education, it is 99.1per cent, so it is almost 100 per cent.

“This shows the acceptance of industry employers and those out there towards our graduates because we put more emphasis on the combination of academics with skills so they can graduate and work.”
