KUCHING: The abandoned Ang Cheng Ho Quarry in Batu Kawah which is now undergoing a makeover may see more development in the area in the future.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said while Phase 1 of the rejuvenation project of the old quarry is being carried out, there would be initial discussions with potential private investors and stakeholders on water theme park, extreme sports, and hotel ‘in’ water (underwater) projects.

He said the first phase of the rejuvenation project comprised construction of a multi-purpose hall and youth innovation hub over the lake.

“Very excited with this unique iconic project, first of its kind in Sarawak on the 20 acres of water surface of the old abandoned quarry.

“Despite everyone from consultants to contractors underestimating the severe challenges of the project, thanks everyone for making good progress,” he said in a Facebook post on Saturday (Jan 15).

Earlier, Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, made a site visit to the construction of the basement building.

The project necessitated draining out water from the lake (which took six months) in order to lay a six-storey foundation structure for the construction of the basement building.

The rejuvenation project of the quarry costs RM9.8 million and took off last year.

On Jan 5, 2021, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg approved an additional RM5 million for the construction of a sport cum community hall. This brings the total allocation for the project to RM15 million.
