More excitement at this year’s Tagang Festival

KUCHING: The third edition of the Tagang Festival, to be held from 28 to 29 July promises more excitement with additional activities.

The festival, which is the first of its kind in the country, is jointly organised by the Sarawak Agriculture Department and Kampung Semadang Tagang System Committee. It will take place at Kampung Semadang,  Borneo Highlands Road, 40 kilometres from here.

State Transport Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, who is also Bengoh assemblyman and patron of the festival, is expected to officiate at the opening and closing ceremonies.

Festival organising co-chairman, Mangang Samson, who is also Kampung Semadang headman, said the festival received the support of the Sarawak Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, and several government agencies and companies.

He said the festival would be celebrated on a larger scale this year with activities such as the Miss Tagang beauty contest, cooking competition, kayaking, music and dance, food bazaar, exhibitions and games for children, besides the fishing competition.

Meanwhile, festival director Robert Kenneth said the main attraction would be the fishing competition on 29 July, with participation in two categories, namely Local Anglers and Tourists & Media.

“The fishing competition which attracted 160 participants last year, offers a total cash prize of RM3,000, while the Miss Tagang beauty contest, to be held in the evening of 29 July and open to single ladies of all races aged 18 to 25, provides cash prizes worth RM3,000,” he said.

As for entertainment, besides music and dance, it would feature several local singers including former Bintang RTM champion, Felicia Gek, he added.
