KAPIT: The Sarawak government is distributing food aid under the Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance (BKSS) package to more people during the latest movement control order (MCO).
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said there was a 24.4 percent increase in recipients compared to last year’s handouts.
“This year, 473,558 households are eligible. Last year, we gave out food aid valued at RM16.4 million to 380,762 households.
“In the rural areas, almost all households will get the aid while in urban areas, priority is given to those in the B40 group,” he said during his visit here today.
Abang Johari said this year, RM35.5m was allocated for the purpose compared to last year’s RM16.4mil – a 116 percent increase.
“We have also allocated RM5m for transportation cost this year.”
Abang Johari said the eligible households were identified with the help of local service centres as well as Ketua Masyarakat and Ketua Kaum (KMKK) in the respective areas.
“The respective divisional disaster management committees decide on the food items, based on the needs of the local communities.
“I wish to thank the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry for ensuring the ample supply of food items, especially in rural areas.”
