KUCHING: The days of bodyguards from Peninsular Malaysia tasked to ensure security for state dignitaries is likely coming to an end.
Thanks to the Sarawak Bodyguards Association, there are now 380 locally trained and qualified bodyguards.
Association president Bolhasan Putit said all the bodyguards had undergone various intensive courses and had passed the required tests.
“The career of a bodyguard in Sarawak is beginning to get the attention of many, including the younger generation.
“We have 380 trained bodyguards in Sarawak while another 800 are members of the association.”
Bolhasan, who is the non-executive director of Kris Kawalan Rapi Sdn Bhd, said his involvement in the field started around 2015.
“While involved with the 218th Conference of Rulers Meeting in Sarawak in 2009, I saw most of the bodyguards came from Peninsular Malaysia.
“From there, I started looking for ways to get directly involved with the association to produce bodyguards from Sarawak.”
He said his involvement in the association was to change the general perception that bodyguards are gangsters.
“This association is a platform for us to train young people to be competent bodyguards.”
