KUCHING: A lot more needs to be done in Tanjung Manis, says Datuk Len Talif.

The Assistant Urban Development and Resources Minister explained that this included upgrading existing infrastructure such as telecommunications and roads, among others.

“If people ask me whether I’m satisfied, of course, I’m not satisfied, but when Tanjung Manis was first developed and what it has become now, I am quite happy.

“…but there is a lot more to be done,” he told the media on today.

Len said such development was necessary to accommodate the growing population.

He noted that the population increase was mainly due to the local industries picking up in recent times.

“Infrastructures going in and out of Tanjung Manis, including from Sibu and Sarikei, need to be upgraded, which will shorten the travel time when transporting goods to and from Tanjung Manis Port.

“If we want to develop the economy in Sarawak, we need to improve the infrastructure. This includes telecommunications, roads, ports, bridges, housing and many others.

“That is a holistic approach in terms of developing a certain area.”

Len added that development in Tanjung Manis was a dynamic process whereby the approach taken to develop a certain area must adapt to the current circumstances, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We must be flexible, but at the same time, be firm in how we proceed with what we have planned and make adjustments according to the situation of the time,” he added.
