KUCHING: The federal government through the Urban Development Authority (UDA) Holdings will build more trading floors for small hawkers within the rural areas sometime this year.

Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedict said that he wanted to see companies such as UDA Holdings get involved with the development.

“UDA Holdings is the agency under our ministry that is the expert in the infrastructure development programme.

“That is why I see that UDA is the suitable agency to implement this project. That is what we are planning this year,” he said.

He disclosed this to reporters after officiating at the UDA Land Sarawak Sdn Bhd sales gallery here today (Feb 9).

Ewon added the project would be the main focus for his ministry with the allocation to be given to the small hawkers beginning this year.

“We are also in a discussion with the Ministry of Finance (MOF) to provide an allocation for the entrepreneur premises or trading floors in next year’s budget,” he added.

Meanwhile when asked about his expectation on the re-tabling of Budget 2023, he stated that his ministry has submitted its allocation to the MOF.

“I am confident that we will get better allocation, especially for Sarawak and Sabah.

“At the same time, we just have to wait and see how it goes when the Budget is re-tabled this coming Feb 24,” he added.

He also hoped that more allocations are given to entrepreneurs in Sarawak and Sabah during the re-tabling of the Budget.
