KUCHING: The Kuching Hokkien Association honoured more senior citizens with angpows in conjunction with the celebration of Chinese New Year 2022.

The angpows were presented to 465 senior citizens by a political secretary to the chief minister Tan Kai on behalf of Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, on Thursday (Feb 10).

Association president Datuk Richard Wee said the red packet presentation was part of the association’s corporate social responsibility (CSR), adding that campaign was an annual event here and other areas involving senior citizens aged 70 years and above.

“Previously, we held a dinner every year for senior citizens, association members and parents.

“However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic since two years ago, we could not hold a dinner. Instead, we distribute the angpows to our senior citizens.

“For senior citizens who were unable to attend today (yesterday), we will distribute the angpows via the drive-through platform,” he told reporters after the angpow hand-over ceremony.

Wee said the angpow money was contributed by association members, the community and dignitaries.

On contributions from the Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Sarawak Divisions, Wee said they had played a significant role in terms of food aid distribution during the ongoing pandemic.

“We support the food programme of the federation, for which they also work closely with the Welfare Department.

“Over the past two years, we have distributed more than 20,000 food packages and provided assistance to hospitals. During the pandemic and movement restriction order in villages and other places, we sent food to the residents at their request.

“In fact, we have donated various aids to hospitals, including the much-needed personal protective equipment, and we have done quite well in this area,” he said.
