KUCHING: A total of 27 telecommunication towers will be built in Puncak Borneo parliamentary constituency under the National Digital Network (Jendela) project to increase telecommunication access there.

Deputy Minister II of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Willie Mongin said the tendering process had been completed and that the projects would be implemented this year.

“Sixteen telecommunication towers were completed last year. The Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) will add several new towers this year,” he said after officiating at the Malaysia Prihatin programme at the Kuching Police Training Centre (Pulapol) at Jalan Puncak Borneo here today.

Willie revealed that so far, 17 telecommunication towers had been upgraded to the 4G networks.

He added that 81 telecommunication towers in the Puncak Borneo parliamentary constituency would be upgraded to the 4G networks this year.

“The telecommunications towers under the Jendela project had also been upgraded to the 4G networks.

“If all the Puncak Borneo areas are covered with these towers, there will be up to 98 percent telecommunication coverage,” he explained.

However, since telecommunication access depended on hilly terrains in some areas, contractors would install boosters and repeaters to enhance the coverage, he said.

The Puncak Borneo MP said the implementation of projects in his constituency was running smoothly due to close cooperation with the Sarawak government and its agencies as well as community leaders.

“We are grateful for the solidarity and continuity of work that ensured the projects ran smoothly. No project here has failed or has been abandoned due to strong and close support from various parties,” said Willie.
