SIBU: More young people have registered for vaccination under  the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) here, said  Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong Branch assistant secretary, Dr Wong Chya Wei.

This, he said, was a positive development which would help Sibu to achieve herd immunity faster.

“It also shows that young people have realised their responsibility to be vaccinated against Covid-19,” he added.

From the recent vaccination programmes here,  Dr Wong  said    those who registered for the jabs under PICK were between 20 and 30 years old.

“At the vaccination programme jointly organised by SUPP Dudong Branch and KPJ Sibu Specialist Medical Centre today (Saturday), most of the vaccine recipients are young.

“We get this trend now because senior citizens are already vaccinated.

“Therefore, we believe that the herd immunity can be achieved earlier by the end of August,” added Dr Wong, who is also the director of KPJ Specialist Medical Centre and head of the programme.

He was speaking to reporters at the mobile vaccination centre   on the ground floor of Medan Hotel, Jalan Wong King Huo.

The one-day vaccination programme wa supported by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH). It was part of the    corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme of KPJ Sibu Specialist Medical Centre.

A total of 1,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses were administered at the mobile vaccination centre; 75 percent of the recipients were young people.

Dr Wong said the vaccination process in Sibu was now at the   third phase due to the close cooperation of various parties.

“Our target in this programme has been successful — many young people have come forward to get their vaccines.

“Besides, the vaccination process is currently very smooth;   about 120 people are vaccinated within an hour. This is a very good achievement,” he added.

Dr Wong said during their next vaccination programme at Jalan Pulau Li Hua on July 17, 1,000 doses would be administered.
