KUCHING: Seven houses and a hut used for storing fishing equipment, were destroyed in fire yesterday, leaving 41 people from seven families in Kampung Sebuan Besar in Bintulu homeless.

According to a statement by State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), 14 firefighters in two fire engines and an EMRS vehicle from Bintulu fire station, led by Senior Fire Officer II Mustafa Wasli, were dispatched to the village after a distress call was received at 2.04am.

The firefighters were also assisted by 20 members of the Jepak Jumbo Squad volunteer fire fighting team at the scene, about 12 kilometres from the fire station.

Upon arrival at the scene, the firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading by using water from the nearby fire hydrant and building fire breaks. The fire was put out around 6.04am.

Also at the scene to help the firefighters were villagers, police and Sesco personnel.
