KUCHING: All mosques and surau in Sarawak will still broadcast the azan (Islamic prayers) five times a day, says Assistant Minister in Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

“The azan will still be broadcast five times a day,” he said during the press conference on Covid-19 at Darul Hana Mosque here yesterday.

He stressed that all mosques and surau in state would not hold prayers, including the weekly Friday prayers, throughout the movement restriction order issued by the government.

“Religious talks, marriages and all other events have also been cancelled following a decision by the state fatwa committee,” he added.

The decision, Dr Abdul Rahman said, was based on the stand taken by the National Islamic Affairs Council on Monday.

He also reminded mosques and surau to step up hygiene standards.

“Committees of the mosques and surau are strongly advised to take precautions regarding cleanliness of their premises. They must provide hand sanitizers for worshippers,” he stressed.
