MIRI: Police here have detained a 39-year-old woman to help them investigate a recent child abuse case.

The suspect who is the mother of a six-month-old baby girl was picked up on Saturday evening (May 22)  by Miri Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel following a report lodged by a healthcare worker at the Miri Hospital.

Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said, when contacted, the full-time housewife was detained at a house in Lorong Harmoni, Tudan Phase 6 around 6 pm.

Hakemal added that the report was lodged after the healthcare worker spotted several suspicious injuries on the baby’s body including bruises and burn marks.

On Friday (May 21), around 11 pm, the baby was brought to the Miri Hospital by her 65-year-old grandfather and aunt.

“The child’s grandfather and her aunt told the medical staff about the abuse,” Hakemal explained

Both recalled that the baby’s mother had even thrown her on the floor and tried to scald her with hot water.
