KUCHING: Motorcyclists and pillion riders still top the list of road fatalities with 15 deaths recorded during the Ops Selamat 15 from May 29 to June 12 in conjunction with the Hari Raya festive season this year.

Eight of the dead were motorcyclists and pillion riders.

Sarawak Head of Traffic Operation and Enforcement, Supt Alexson Chabu Naga said the accidents were mostly due to speeding and human error, such as overtaking another vehicle.

During the period, a total of 751 accidents were reported, an increase of 71 cases or 10.4 percent compared to the corresponding period last year.

“That is why I issued the advice for those going long distance to be more alert and careful as some roads are undergoing upgrading where there will be traffic diversions at certain sections,” he said when contacted yesterday.

On the type of vehicles involved in the accidents, he revealed that cars numbered 1,188; four-wheel drive vehicles (221); motorcycles (83); lorries (34) and vans (25).

During the duration of Ops Selamat 15, police issued a total of 14,287 summonses for various traffic offences.
