MUKAH:  Road users, especially those returning home in conjunction with the coming Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration, are advised to drive responsibly so that they arrive at their destinations safely.

Mukah Divison Resident Hamdiah Bakir said during festive season the roads would be busier than usual and road users are, therefore, reminded to take care of their safety.

She added this included not driving beyond the speed limit, not driving under the influence of alcohol and adhering to the road regulations.

“This is the message we are trying to put across to the public especially road users during festive season,” she told the media after the launch of a roadside safety campaign at the compound of Menara Pehin Setia Raja (MPSR) here on Thursday (Jan 27).

The guests of honour were Balingian assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi and Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine.

The symbolic launch of the campaign witnessed the joint handover by her and others 20 out of 100 bags of goodies to the motorists, while the balance (80 bags) will be handed out immediately when the weather permits.

The campaign, which was organised by Mukah Division Road Safety Council (MKJR) and Mukah Division Majlis Kebudayaan dan Sukan Anggota-anggota Kerajaan (Maksak) was earlier planned at the roadside at Jalan Mukah-Balingian near here, but later shifted to MPSR due to the rain.

She said it was aimed at giving awareness to the public especially during festive seasons where the roads would be busier than usual.

According to her, as Sarawak was now in phase 4 of the economic recovery plan, people were free to travel and would take the opportunity to return home to meet their families and friends, resulting in congested roads.

In view of that, she added Mukah Division MKJR advised all road users to be careful.

She also wished those who celebrate the occasion a “Happy CNY” and prayed that those who would return home arrive safely at their destinations.
