The Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MoTS) is set to work closely with the federal government to implement the Stage Bus Services Transformation (SBST) programme.
Speaking at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday, its Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said that stage bus plays a vital role in providing services to urban dwellers.
“Recognising that a certain group of urban dwellers depends on stage buses for their daily commute, it is our ministry’s intention to enhance the service by increasing the number of buses and service frequencies, covering more routes and broader areas,” said Lee.
According to him, the ministry is currently conducting a survey on public transport to gauge public perception and comprehend people’s behaviour regarding the use of land public transport.
Addressing the Yayasan Sarawak Free School Bus programme, Lee highlighted its positive impact on addressing transportation constraints faced by students. The programme has successfully benefited approximately 7,666 students in Kuching, Sibu, and Miri, aiming to combat absenteeism and reduce dropouts.
“To ensure that the Yayasan Sarawak Free School Bus programme reaches the intended target group, my ministry, in collaboration with Yayasan Sarawak, is actively strengthening its implementation,” Lee explained. “In this regard, Yayasan Sarawak has introduced a digitalised electronic card called ‘My Yayasan System’.”
