SIBU: Concern for the safety of the public has prompted a meeting to be convened to discuss the repair of ageing and damaged fire hydrants in Pelawan.

Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee chaired the session with the Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Department.

He took to his official Facebook yesterday (May 5) to voice out his concern, saying: “Over time, fire hydrants inevitably deteriorate, and without prompt repairs, they will severely hamper the efficiency and speed of emergency fire response.”

Tiang stressed the importance of ensuring the reliability of hydrants in emergencies to effectively safeguard the community and property.

“By refurbishing these ageing and damaged fire hydrants, we can significantly enhance the overall safety of the area Pelawan, offering residents and businesses a more robust security assurance,” he added.

Also present was Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue station chief Abdul Mutalif Ja’afar.
