KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii took time out to visit a 14-year old cancer-stricken patient at Sarawak General Hospital here Tuesday (Jan 31).

Dr Yii, who was accompanied by his special assistant George Lam said the visit was to better understand the situation of the patient and find ways to help the family.

According to him, the teenager was diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer some time last year.

“We were first alerted to the problem when his father approached our office seeking help.

“He (the patient) was first diagnosed in March last year when he fell in school and the teacher told the parent that he could not balance himself or walk properly and was also suffering from nausea and vomitting.

“The teacher then suggested the patient undergo a medical check at a hospital where he was diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer,” he said in a statement.

Dr Yii added that the patient went through brain surgery at the end of last year.

“He then started chemotherapy and radiotherapy and is expected to complete his round of chemo in the middle of this year,” he said, adding that the patient who has been in hospital for over a month is still very weak.

“I arranged for some allocations to help the family to reduce their financial burden during this tough time,” said Dr Yii, pointing out that the boy’s father works as a maintenance technician but does not have a stable income.

His mother used to sell kuih but had to stop to attend to her ailing son, he said.

“We may not have much, but we will try our best to help those in need,” he added.
