KUCHING: Obesity, a growing problem in the population, came under the spotlight at an event celebrating physical finesse here Sunday.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii used the occasion to highlight the need to make lifestyle adjustments to ensure health and community well-being.

He warned that obesity among Malaysians has become a public health concern, stating that it affects individuals, families, communities and leads to numerous health complications, including diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.

Dr Yii spoke of the threat at the Mr Kuching bodybuilding event held at the Sarawak Youth and Sports Complex Multipurpose Hall here.

“The National Health Screening Initiative 2023 found that more than half, or 53.5 per cent of Malaysians screened are overweight or obese (31.3 per cent overweight and 22.2 per cent obese),” he said.

“This statistic highlights the urgent need for effective interventions and lifestyle changes.

“By addressing issues like obesity, we not only transform our bodies but also contribute to the overall health and well-being of our community.”

In this context he expressed immense pride and joy in celebrating the dedication, perseverance, and triumphs of the bodybuilding community.

“Bodybuilding is more than just a sport; it is a testament to the human spirit’s unyielding commitment to self-improvement, discipline and resilience.

“Each one of you embodies these qualities, and it is your relentless pursuit of excellence that inspires us all,” said Dr Yii.

He said bodybuilding had a profound impact that went beyond the gym and competitions.

“Through bodybuilding, we champion a lifestyle that promotes healthy eating, regular physical activity and a positive mindset.

“We all can become role models for those around us, demonstrating that change is possible with dedication and the right support system.”

Dr Yii said that over the past year, the bodybuilding association had made remarkable achievements, driven by its athletes’ dedication, hard work, and the strong sense of community that unites them.

He pledged to continue assisting the association in its future events with the aim of fostering a supportive and motivating environment for members to excel.
