MIRI: Miri Port Authority (MPA) is committed to providing an excellent environment for career development among its employees through creativity, said its chairman Paulus Palu Gumbang.

This was said after he declared open the Miri’s Port Authority Creative and Innovation Centre today.

“This is required to meet the current and future needs of our customers and stakeholders. MPA has also embarked upon several service delivery management initiatives which have been planned and carried out in line with the industry’s needs and business activities requirements.

“All these need constraint and continuous learning and updates,” he said.

For the benefit of the MPA staff and other interested parties, he continued, the establishment of the centre is a great initiative to promote lifelong learning for everyone and is a good example of community and government collaboration.

“I was made to understand that in establishing this centre, much support and assistance has been rendered by all related agencies in particular the Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Pustaka Miri, and Dewan Suarah Miri,” he pointed out.

He continued by congratulating general manager of the Miri Port Authority Serawa Budol, the management team, and the staff for setting up the centre successfully.

A resource centre plays the role of source of information, storage, and distribution point for equipment and materials for the purpose of learning among MPA staff, he pointed out.

“It also enables staff to obtain information about the port shipping and maritime related activities from all over the world through hard printed copy and through the Internet.

“By patronising the centre, an officer shall gain knowledge, skills and also related exposures to what are available in the industries,” he said.

He urged the staff to fully utilise the facility of continuous learning as being provided by the Authority.

“It is a common phrase that knowledge is power, thus, you must have the courage to seek knowledge through continuous learning and educating yourself,” he stressed.

Meanwhile Serawa said the objective of the resource centre is to offer staff spaces for research, study, meetings, discussions, and other activities related to the port, maritime, and shipping industries in order to advance their knowledge and abilities.

“It aims to collate and put in systematic display of MPA’s milestones and achievements and also provide an avenue to encourage reading and lifelong learning for all staff and any interested parties,” Serawa explained.

The establishment and setting up of the centre marks another significant step in their efforts towards building a world-class human capital development and life-long learning, she went on to say.

She strongly believed that with the related port and maritime materials available in this centre, staff, customers and the general public could enhance their knowledge from the references that have been provided and be upgraded over time.

“I hope many of our staff and colleagues patronise this place for their own good and we will make KPIs in terms of how many books you borrow and read in order to encourage reading and learning among our staff.

“There was a saying which said Leaders are Readers. But not all Readers are Leaders,” she said further.
