KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) will be collaborating with the Economics and Business Faculty of the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to conduct a joint study to address the issues of poverty in the rural parts of Samarahan.

MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos said that the focus would be to find out the basic reasons why poverty existed and was still persisting in the villages and then to see on the possible solutions.

“Are the reasons economic ones or cultural or lack of basic facilities or lack of opportunities or all of these?

“Is it related to the basic attitudes of the poor? MPKS and UNIMAS will analyse and find out.

“MPKS and UNIMAS will meet again to work on the details of the proposed joint study,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Minos said once the details were sorted out, the physical study and research would commence, most probably by early next year.
