MIRI: The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri District held their blood donation campaign at their Jalan Bulan Sabit premises here on Sunday.

This was their 100th donation drive since March 25 last year.

The need to hold the blood donation here was due to the requirement for a safe location when the Covid-19 pandemic started.

State’s Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin who is also MRC deputy chairman was on hand to officiate at the event that was held in collaboration with Miri Life Care Society.

In his brief speech after officiating at the event, Lee extended his thanks to all the blood donors here who had come forward to support this life saving campaign.

These facilities have been utilised as the mobile and offsite blood donation centre in Miri City as a standard operating procedure (SOP) compliant venue to hold blood donation, Lee pointed out.

It is a suitable and safe place for holding blood donations, outside of the Miri Hospital Blood Bank, he asserted.

This time around, the number of donors at the Miri Hospital has dropped significantly due to the number of Covid-19 positive patients there, said the Senadin assemblyman.

He also told blood donors who come to the facility here not to worry, as disinfections are always done at the facility to ensure it is safe.

“In fact, our MRCs volunteers have been administered with Covid-19 vaccine together with other frontliners,” Lee explained.

He also thanked all the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for their joint efforts to hold blood donations here.

A total of 30 persons registered and 21 were successful in donating the much-needed blood today.

Up till Sunday, a total of 4,234 donors had registered here with 3,634 having succeeded in donating.
