KUCHING: The federal Cabinet will only sit on Wednesday to decide on whether Sarawak will host this year’s national-level Malaysia Day celebration, said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen.
He was responding to a statement by Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah that the matter had been decided upon by the federal government.
“To say that the federal government had decided on the matter is jumping the gun.
“Abdul Karim has erred once on the tourism tax matter and I urge that he check his facts before issuing a statement,” said Chong.
Chong said that Pakatan Harapan Sarawak was willing to work together with the state government to host the Malaysia Day celebration in Sarawak.
“We have no problem working with the state government. The question is whether the state government is open to the idea,” he told reporters at the DAP Headquarters here today.
“That’s why we proposed that the Malaysia Day celebration be held in Sarawak. We have been requested by the federal cabinet to offer our views on the matter and last Sunday, we decided to recommend the idea to the cabinet.”
Chong also urged state Cabinet members not to take a hostile stance against Pakatan Harapan Sarawak for floating the idea of the Malaysia Day celebration.
“Such a stance is definitely uncalled for. Let’s work together for the benefit of Sarawak,” he said.
