KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must maintain the campaign to rid the world of nuclear weapons, said co-founder of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (Ican) Dr Ronald McCoy.

“The number of nuclear weapons had fallen from a high of 68,000 in 1985 to about 15,000 today. The use of one nuclear weapon could kill hundreds of thousands of people – one nuclear weapon is one too many.”

He said in his speech as the guest of honour at the Commonwealth Association of Leadership, Malaysia (Calm) pop-up event in Sabah recently.

Calm chairman Hanaa Wong Abdullah said the involvement of people like Dr McCoy at the weekend event reflected the growing importance of the Commonwealth to the future of Malaysia.

“This organisation is committed to helping develop leaders across government, industry and non-governmental organisations to deal with the significant and varied challenges that we face,” she added.

Established last October, the organisation works closely with the Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conferences (CSC).
