MUKAH: In line with current technological advance, the Mukah Division should not be left behind in online mapping content in the current digital era.

According to Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine, the concept of online maps is a necessity nowadays, especially for the purpose of helping navigation to locations.

“In fact, it is also an important element of today’s lifestyle and digital business.

“For example, traders and tourism industry players in Mukah will be easier to contact and customers can be helped to their locations or business premises more quickly and accurately,” he said in the Community Service Programme (Niche Area): Community ICT Literacy Through Digital Mapping Application Training Organised by Mukah Polytechnic here recently.

Royston delivered his speech.

In the programme, more than 70 youth from the Mukah Parliamentary Constituency were given training throughout the programme and they gained skills in updating digital map data, especially the Mukah Division, through the HERE WeGo website and application.

Rosyton is also confident that the Digital Mapping Application Training programme will help education and youth self-development, and it will indirectly help local economic and tourism activities.

“I emphasise the importance of the youth’s positive involvement as agents in the digital world who have skills and digital media literacy.

“This programme will be an additional vehicle in the access and enthusiasm of the young community or the youth in the digital environment.

“Participants of this programme will have the opportunity to experience the pleasure of updating environmental information directly to the online map and can add or update roads, routes, places and premises to provide accuracy to the online map through the platform provided by HERE Technologies,” he explained further.

He believes that the programme will position Mukah Polytechnic (PMU) as a centre of excellence in Technical , Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and knowledge development in the field of information technology and technology skills development.

In the meantime, PMU director Dr. Zamzam Mohd Walid said Mukah Polytechnic together with industry players in global digital mapping content, namely HERE Technologies, came forward to implement community service programmes for the local community.

“Through its subsidiary, HERE Malaysia Sdn. Bhd, the youth will be trained and given access to online mapping technology.

“As a superior TVET institution, PMU always cooperates with industry parties, not only for the benefit of the students’ education but also to benefit the local community,” he said.

Also present were community analysis officer, HERE Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. Ronny Allen Mile, assistant youth and sports officer Mukah Mohammad Arbi Rosli, head of Mathematics, Science and Computer Department Sudiman Suhaili, head of Student Affairs and Development Department Aeisah Karim and head of Instructional and Multimedia Development Unit Mazira Ramli.
