MUKAH: Mukah has enough supply of umai (a popular traditional native dish of the Melanau) even though it is now the monsoon season.

In addition, umai is still being sold at its usual price.

Umai, a dish of sliced raw fish with a mixture of onions, chillies, salt and calamansi juice, is always highly demanded by foodies. Most umai is made using ‘ikan parang’ fillets because it is believed to be sweeter than other fish.

Osman shows how umai is made.

Meanwhile, umai producer Osman Laily, when met at the Mukah Wet Market, said a container of fresh umai was still priced at RM10 despite the rainy season.

“Visitors to Mukah should taste our traditional native dish because their journeys will not be complete without enjoying this delicious fresh seafood.

“In addition to selling fresh umai, we (umai makers at Mukah Wet Market) also sell traditional ‘sambal campur’ at RM3 as well as ‘sambal cecah jeb’ (a more contemporary variation of sambal) at RM5,” he said.
