KUCHING: Music has the power to unite the people regardless of race, religion and background, says Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii.

“We even have Malay singers singing Chinese songs and this is the beauty of the multiculturalism we have here in Sarawak,” he said in a statement here today

“After two years of Covid-19, it is so good to be able to come together and organise an event again for the good of the people of Kuching.”

He was referring to a singing competition called #S1NG! the live finals of which was held at the Amphitheatre on Sunday night.

It was organised by DAPSY in collaboration with HiDup Kuching & Digital Transformation Association Of Sarawak(DTAS), with the support of his parliamentary office.

“I strongly believe in the potential of young Sarawakians and their talents in different fields including in arts and music.

“We have so many talented people here in Sarawak and it is my honour to be able to play a part to help provide a platform for them to express their talents and hopefully be discovered by professional recording studios.”

Dr Yii said he had encouraged the contestants to broaden their horizon, incorporate technology and also digitalise their talents so that they can reach a bigger audience.

Many famous celebrities were discovered and made it big through online media such as YouTube where you can reach an international audience, he said.

“That is why with the amazing talents that we have here in Sarawak, who knows which heights they can reach as they put themselves out there on the international stage.

”Our office will continue to support such events especially to help young people express their talents and potential.

“Next we will be supporting a “Battle of the Bands” competition here in Kuching around the month of August,” he added.
