MIRI: Dewan Negara president Datuk Mutang Tagal has expressed concerns over the rising number of drug addicts and drug-related arrests in Sarawak.

As such, he pointed out the need for comprehensive strategies to address both prevention and treatment of drug addiction, as well as effective law enforcement measures to combat drug trafficking and distribution.

“Collaborative efforts between government agencies, law enforcement, healthcare providers, and community organisations are essential to tackle this issue effectively,” he said during a dialogue session at Kenosis Sarawak, a drug rehabilitation for youths in Miri, today (Apr 6).

He said the statistics provided by the police reveal a concerning trend of increasing drug-related arrests in Sarawak over the past two years.

“In 2022, there were 9,092 arrests for drug-related cases, which rose to 10,365 in 2023. Specifically in Miri, there were 852 arrests in 2022 and 1,098 in 2023,” he explained.

Additionally, he said, the value of drugs seized in Sarawak also saw a dramatic increase.

“In 2022, the value was reported at RM12,230,867.00, whereas in 2023, it surged to RM142,458,470.38.

“These statistics underscore the urgent need for intensified efforts in tackling drug trafficking and addiction in Sarawak, with a focus on both law enforcement and preventive measures,” he added.

Data from the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) also revealed a worrying rise in the number of drug abusers in Sarawak, with 9,645 reported cases in 2023 compared to 4,762 in 2018.

“In 2023, there were 9,645 reported drug abusers, a significant rise from 4,762 in 2018. This trend indicates a pressing need for targeted interventions and prevention strategies to address substance abuse in the region,” he said.

Moreover, he said , the data reveals that the highest number of drug users fall within the age group of 15 to 39 years old.

“This demographic trend underscores the importance of early intervention and education programs targeting youth and young adults to prevent drug initiation and encourage healthy lifestyles,” he disclosed.
