KUCHING: Sarawak’s legal team’s visit to London later this month will not affect the talks on devolution of power currently underway between Sarawak and the federal government.

This was pointed out by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Dato ‘ Sri Nancy Shukri during a press conference at her Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House here yesterday.

Sarawak, Nancy pointed out, had the right to conduct further research on the history of the state, particularly, the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

“Now Sarawak intends to send a legal team to London and the expenses are said to be huge but that is Sarawak’s right, ” she said.

“What we are doing today is the result of our independence, and now we realise we want more.

“If this team finds something, it will bring it back to the state government and the Sabah and Sarawak technical committees. After that, it will be before being taken to the federal level (the steering committee) to be discussed and refined,” added Nancy, who is also the Batang Sadong Member of Parliament.

The state’s legal team to London, it is learnt, will be led by Law, Federal-State Relations and Project Monitoring Assistant Minister, Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

Others in the team include State Legal Counsel, Datuk JC Fong, State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker, Datuk Gerawat Gala and lawyers from the State Attorney General Chambers.

It is learnt that the team will be in London from 16 July to study the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) for four or five days.
