Nancy Shukri’s mother dies

KUCHING: The mother to Federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri passed away on Wednesday night (June 16).

The late Bibi MacPherson @ McPherson, 90 breathed her last at Nancy’s residence at 11.54pm.

MacPherson was the elder child of Scottish-born John Andrew McPherson who was Kapit Resident during the Brooke administration and Chua Eng Dok who was a Chinese-Iban from Kapit.

When she was 11 years old, she was rescued by a Malay woman named Rokiah while her father was killed by the Japanese army during their escape attempt in Batang Ai.

MacPherson was raised at Kampung Panglima Seman Lama in Kuching before she married a Malay-Melanau teacher, Shukri Mahidi who hailed form Santubong in 1948.

Throughout her lifetime, she was active in politics as well as women movement in rural areas through the Sarawak Federation of Women’s Institute (PPWS).
