KUCHING: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, who is also Batang Sadong MP, surveyed the development of Rural Transformation Projects (RTPs) around Gedong, Simunjan, and Sadong Jaya yesterday.

This was her first visit since the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) and conditional movement control order (CMCO), which began on March 18 and ended on June 9.

Among the completed RTP projects was the upgrading of Rumah Usahawan Wanita Simunjan valued at RM200,000, which began construction in October last year and was completed in April this year.

Nancy, who is also Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) Tourism Development Committee chairperson, surveyed sites in her area which had the potential to be developed as recreational and tourism areas.

These included the proposed project site of Rest and Recreation (R&R) and the proposed project of Dewan Warisan Batang Sadong adjacent to Batang Sadong Bridge which will be used as a cultural centre for communities in the Batang Sadong area, comprising various ethnicities such as Malay, Bugis, Javanese and Iban.

According to her, the area could be “Insta-worthy” to those who were seeking something unique and different in experiences when visiting someplace.

“In Simunjan, we have recreational places for families and enthusiasts of eco-tourism, who can enjoy the scenery and clean river water which flows from the Wong Muas waterfall, picnic areas such as the Krian River, Kepayang, and also Mount Ngeli for hiking.

“In Gedong, we have production centres for woven songket Sarawak and prawn noodles. Meanwhile, in Sadong Jaya, we have Bugis ethnic food products such as burasak, ikan pindang, daging Kak Daro, sambalak celak, cucor lumek, and kambu feria,” she said.
