SIBU: An initiative emphasising on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education will be launched in the Nangka constituency next month.

Assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee said the programme would be known as STEM50, in which he would adopt 50 students from three secondary schools in his constituency.

“I will adopt 50 children (each school) from SMK Agama Sibu, SMK Jalan Oya, and SMK Kampung Nangka.

“These students will be given tuition and STEM education to enable them to be included in the Science stream when they reach upper secondary level,” he said during the presentation of Yayasan Sarawak uniform aid here on Thursday (Aug 4) .

Dr Annuar said achieving 60 per cent of students in STEM was Sarawak’s goal, “however, we are still far from it as we have not even reached 30 per cent.”

“That is why the initiative carried out in the Nangka constituency is one of the efforts so that we can increase the percentage.

“If a year I can adopt 150 students, in three years to come I will have 450 students, hence we will have more students in this stream,” he added.

Meanwhile, 707 pupils and students from primary and secondary schools in Nangka, Bawang Assan, and Tamin constituencies received the uniform aid.

“I want to thank Yayasan Sarawak for this initiative and I believe that it will greatly benefit students and parents, especially those in need.

“Yayasan Sarawak has taken this wise step to help students and parents, and I hope that with this aid, it will be able to ease the burden of parents,” said Dr Annuar.
