KUCHING: Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has welcomed the announcement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to beef up border security.

“Currently, the importance of building roads at the border will help strengthen security along the border.

“This is not due to the threat of the bordering nations but instead to open up wider job opportunities and trade between the neighbouring countries,” he said when met by reporters at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex yesterday (Jan 20).

He was commenting on the allocation of RM1 billion by the federal government to strengthen border security in Sarawak and upgrade roads in the surrounding areas.

He added that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has been assigned to handle the issue at hand with several discussions currently being made to solve it.

Nanta was attending a high-level Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) implementation action committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the DUN complex.
