KUALA LUMPUR:  The government through the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) will come up with and implement the National Cyber Security Strategy in the middle of this year to tackle cyber security threats in a comprehensive manner, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the strategy would be implemented through resource mobilisation and infrastructure development that focuses on the formation of the National Cyber Security Workforce to ensure that the country could optimise the use of existing resources.

Dr Wan Azizah

“Cyber security threats will continue to challenge national security management when there is a growing dependence on useful new technologies that, at the same time, also pose threats to national security.”

She said this in reply to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PAS-Pasir Mas) who wanted to know the government’s efforts to curb cyber security threats that could also threaten national sovereignty.

It was reported last year that the policy, according to the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, was aimed to curb cyber-attacks from within and outside the country, including to protect personal information of Internet users.

Elaborating, Dr Wan Azizah said the government had also taken proactive steps to improve the country’s preparedness in facing the cyber threats and attacks through the formulation and implementation of the National Cyber Crisis Management Plan.

She said the plan was formulated based on a risk management framework which outlines the strategies to mitigate the impact of cyber-attacks and the responses needed by the Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) comprising various public and private agencies.

Among those that have been implemented is the National Cyber Crisis Training Exercise (X-Maya), which aims to test the effectiveness of procedures and familiarize CNII’s agencies with the mechanisms in handling cyber incidents and to increase the agency’s capacity and preparedness to tackle any cyber threat. – Bernama
